Abstract
Mobile agents are small programs that have the ability to perform tasks in an autonomous way, while roaming the Internet. They are not bound to the runtime environment of a single computer, but may 'hop' to another machine when appropriate. Vertis, an organisation specialised in information technology and Oracle solutions in particular, is interested in the whole concept of mobile agents. In a continuating project they want to experiment with this new technique. In the first phase of the project, research was done on the possibilities of mobile agents. In the next phase, Vertis wanted to develop a new mobile agent platform, based on the Grasshopper platform by IKV++. This is the document that was made in that phase of the project. We will explain what the main goals of this phase were, which choices were to be made, the influence of new standards and techniques, like F1PA and MASIF, for which purposes mobile agents can be used, and eventually how the Vertis Mobile Agent Platform was developed. We will describe the use of RDF as an agent content language and make an attempt to the development of a uniform query language for RDF. At the end, we will describe the development of a mobile agent application, which should be an example for new applications to come.
