Abstract

In Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) a large set of dense fiber tracts representing white matter is generated. Fiber Tract Bundling (FTB) is an experimental technique to bundle tracts. In this way a scalable abstraction is created. This technique displaces the tracts in space and therefore the bundled tracts lose coherence with the anatomy. This loss of information is studied in this work. In order to investigate how FTB behaves with respect to the anatomy, we developed and implemented an evaluation method that enables the user to monitor the bundling process on a curved surface. The fiber tract bundling is visualized against the Fractional Anisotropy (FA) image, which is used as an anatomical reference. We present the FTB technique, demonstrate our evaluation method and show the results we have obtained.
