Abstract
The research carried out in this paper is part of a larger ongoing experiment, the N-12 production experiment being conducted by the Medical Physics Group at KVI-CART, that requires a NaI(Tl) scintillation detection which is yet to be calibrated. The aim of this research was to investigate the production of Ga-66 via proton irradiation on natural zinc, with a water degraded proton beam, for use in calibrating the NaI(Tl) scintillation detector. Cross section data for the Zn(p,x)Y reactions (Y represents Ga-66 and contaminants) was combined with data of the proton fluence in the natural zinc plate at specific water depths, to yield the reaction rate R per starting proton for each isotope Y. Using R, a Python function was written to determine the activity and corresponding gamma spectra of each isotope. It was found that, for a 90 MeV proton beam and a beam degrading water tank placed 50 cm from the beam exit, the natural zinc plate should be placed at a water depth of 60 mm for optimal Ga-66 production. Furthermore, for a water depth of 60 mm, a beam current of 30 nA, an irradiation time of 2 hours, and an activity measurement time of 10 hours, it was found that the 1039.231 keV gamma decay line of Ga-66 is the best line to use for the detector calibration. The research conducted in this paper is yet to be experimentally verified, but if verified, offers a method of optimisation for experiments of a similar nature.
