Abstract
Munition from World War II is still present in the North Sea, both in large quantities deliberately dumped in dumpsites, and as scattered UXO on the seabed. This report gives an overview of the risks to humans and to the marine environment in case of leaking and explosions, and suggests ways to improve upon the current monitoring and clearing methods. The Dutch munition dumpsites have reached the point where they have started leaking. These are however still incredibly small amounts that dilute quickly. It is however still important to keep up to date with the best monitoring practices, such as the use of passive sampling. UXO-clearing often includes exploding the item, which can lead to hearing loss and deafness in species like the Harbour Porpoise. The current use of ADD only works in a limited range. It can be much more effective to dampen the sound with a bubble screen or to avoid deep-water explosions altogether by using different equipment that can safely move an item to shallow water, or defuse an item without explosions.
